I'm currently working with Fabio on IRC. I pointed him to
http://www.shorewall.net/SimpleBridge.html and the two-interface quickstart
guide.

The key piece of information missing from his post is that he is bridging
his local LAN and modem so he can access the web server built into the modem
at 192.168.1.1 and that his 'net' interface is ppp0 (PPPoE). So a simple
two-interface configuration with the bridge as the internal interface (with
routeback) should work fine.
