Subject: Availability of Shorewall 4.x packages in Debian The Shorewall developers are pleased to announce that packages for Shorewall 4.0.5 are now in Debian's experimental repository. Users of Debian and Debian derivatives now have available to them the latest Shorewall packages from official sources. Packages will be uploaded to Sid (unstable) in the coming days and within a couple of weeks should make their way to Lenny (testing). Please bear in mind that only stable upstram releases of Shorewall are uploaded to Debian. However, because of the way Debian names its releases and repositories, these packages are uploaded to Debian unstable and must migrate to Debian testing. Updates to Debian's stable release only occur in response to very severe bugs or security issues, meaning that the Shorewall packages in Debian's stable release will not normally be updated. However, the latest Shorewall releases will always be available in Debian unstable and shortly thereafter in Debian testing. Users of Debian's unstable or testing releases will not need to do anything. When the shorewall packages become available in your particular distribution, they will appear when you update your packages. However, users of Debian's stable release will need to decide if tracking the Shorewall packages in unstable is desired. This can be accomplished through the use of apt pinning. For details on apt pinning please see: - <http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch-apt-get.en.html#s-pin> - <http://wiki.debian.org/AptPinning> For more information on the Shorewall packages in Debian please see: - <http://packages.debian.org/shorewall-perl> - <http://packages.debian.org/shorewall-shell> - <http://packages.debian.org/shorewall-common> - <http://packages.debian.org/shorewall-lite> - <http://packages.debian.org/shorewall-doc> For more information on running Shorewall on Debian please see: - <http://trac.shorewall.net/wiki/ShorewallOnDebian> About Shorewall --------------- The Shoreline Firewall, more commonly known as "Shorewall", is a high-level tool for configuring Netfilter. You describe your firewall/gateway requirements using entries in a set of configuration files. Shorewall reads those configuration files and with the help of the iptables utility, Shorewall configures Netfilter to match your requirements. Shorewall can be used on a dedicated firewall system, a multi-function gateway/router/server or on a standalone GNU/Linux system. Shorewall does not use Netfilter's ipchains compatibility mode; as a consequence, Shorewall can take advantage of Netfilter's connection state tracking capabilities to create a stateful firewall.
