As you probably expected, if won't work even if I "shorewall clear". Sorry
for my ignorance. I'll contact a samba mailing list instead.

Then I'm going to ask the same question that was asked previously; if you
"shorewall clear", does it work? If it doesn't work with Shorewall cleared,
it certainly isn't going to work with Shorewall started.
