Found it: According to the libvrt documentation, when using the default
virtual bridge 'user mode' it sets up iptables rules to NAT the VMs. The
virtual bridge is 'not to be connected to a physical interface.'

I think I'm back to the original post: changing to a bridged
configuration declared in /etc/networking/interfaces or such.
