You were absolutely correct concerning both of the settings (masq and
IP_FORWARDING) and I'm now up and running. Besides that, there was one
other thing I missed, though: my lxc entry in the host's
/etc/network/interfaces was wrong. I've corrected that, too.

It is. Route returns:

IP_FORWARDING=Yes in shorewall.conf.
