Hello all,

I am having trouble with very slow download speeds using simple traffic shaping.

I pretty much get the same results no matter where I try this.

For example, at one location I have incoming bandwidth of about 200mbps and
outgoing of about 20mbps.

I want to slow both of those down a little because I have VOIP phones.

Here is my /etc/shorewall/tcinterfaces:

#INTERFACE TYPE IN_BANDWIDTH OUT_BANDWIDTH
ens10 External 180mbit:200kb 15mbit

No matter what I put under IN_BANDWIDTH I get about 15mpbs download and if I
put a - under IN_BANDWIDTH I get the full download speed.

OUT_BANDWIDTH always works perfectly. I have tried all the different settings
with ethtool: ethtool -K eth1 gso off gro off tso off.
Nothing I try for IN_BANDWIDTH seems to make a difference.

--------

Just about 5 minutes ago I had an idea to try this in
/etc/shorewall/tcinterfaces:

#INTERFACE TYPE IN_BANDWIDTH OUT_BANDWIDTH
ens3 Internal - 170mbit
ens10 External - 15mbit

ens3 - is the local network
ens10 - is the internet

and it worked! the Internet speed was right about where I wanted it.

So my question is this: What is the disadavantage of doing it this way?

I appreciate any help on this!

Thank you,
Gary Attaway
