My apologies, I must've had some older versions of clutter in my
/usr/local. I rebuilt a few packages from most recent stable:
clutter-1.26.0.tar.xz
clutter-gtk-1.8.0.tar.xz
cogl-1.22.0.tar.xz
gtk+-3.20.6.tar.xz
wayland-1.10.93.tar.xz

And I'm build went mostly smoothly after that. I did notice the following
warning repeated a few times:
L 7807 2016-07-02 13:54:52 [CRT] Plugins.vala:356: Unable to load module
/usr/local/lib/shotwell/plugins/builtin/shotwell-transitions.so:
libshotwell-plugin-common.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file
or directory

but I'm guessing those may also be on master?
