Yes, they are in the library, and have tags and other metadata that I
really don't want to lose.
The non-working advice is available in various places, eg:

as well as various forum postings.
Looking at the FAQ, you forgot to drag the photos from the new location
into Shotwell, although that should be handled by the automatic import
as well.
Very odd.
