I wouldn't need the checkboxes either and would be happy with a
text-field only solution. The only advantage is that if you have several
tags, it is currently not possible to see them all in the small
text-field. Either a multi-line field (or a graphical list of all tags
that gives a nice overview, like a tag cloud). Amateurish mockup
attached. Cloud would be optional.
