Ken,

thanks for your bug report and helpful sleuthing.  I just looked at 
AppDirs.vala and saw that if Shotwell is unable to create any of several 
directories under .shotwell then it will exit unexpectedly.  Instead, in 
this situation we should display a dialog with an error message and then 
exit.  I've ticketed this at http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/2532 .  I hope 
we can fix this for the upcoming 0.7.2 release.

And as for just why Shotwell can't create 
/home/kjernigan/.shotwell/tmp/13887 in your particular case, well, I 
don't know.  I'd stare at the file/directory permissions very carefully.  :)
