I think - like Florian does - then Shotwell shouldn't export any 
metadata at all. I assume that in most cases there is no need for 
restoring the original imported metadata (and how would you separate 
that data from added ones if we get in-file-tags with the next version?) 
for exporting a file.
To keep things simple, the user has just to decide whether he wants to 
export the whole metadata or nothing at all. I think this would be enough.

Further I agree with Vincent that this should not be the default, but 
the checkbox you proposed seems to be a very good (and quick'n'easy) 
option for solving this issue...
