I'm glad you're interested in contributing to Shotwell. I think that the search box might be a bit ambitious as a first contribution, however. We're currently planning to implement a search box in the Shotwell 0.9 time frame and I think the search box will be a major feature for that release. It will replace the existing rating filter icon on the Shotwell toolbar, since you'll be able to use the search box to filter by rating, name and more as you suggested. The design of the search box is still undetermined, but may involve some delicate user interface tradeoffs and the core Shotwell team will be highly involved in making those.
