You're right that this is an issue with gphoto. We have a ticket for
it: http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/1903 and have also filed a ticket
with gphoto:

Not really. The best workaround is what you're already doing, using
"Import from Folder..." with the mounted camera.

This does appears to be an issue with gphoto as well. I would suggest
continuing to use the workaround you've identified.

I believe the thumbnails come from gphoto, and are not available for
png files, and occasionally not available for a jpeg file. If you
could send us a jpeg for which a preview did not display, we can look
into it.
