Marcel, This is a good point. I assume you mean batch processing as processing of selection of photos in Shotwell, but not feeding Shotwell with files from command-line, etc. In my opinion, a good example of usable and powerful UI with built-in tools is Flickr. It enables batch processing really well. Perhaps new type of plugin's would be possible: batch processors working on selection of files. I'm glad Adam agrees with SPIT generalisation and events support, etc. Though, it would be complex task, I think.
