There's a gphoto2 command-line program (distributed as a separate package under Ubuntu, as I recall). Make sure it's installed and try running this from a console:
$ gphoto2 --shell This allows you to traverse your camera's filesystem like any other. What I'm curious is, are you able to run this without error?
