Sysprof will run even if you haven't built your program with debug symbols, but its results will be most informative if debug symbols are present. Fortunately, it's easy to build Shotwell with debug symbols (using --debug), and debug symbols for most common libraries (such as glib and gtk) are easily available on major distributions.
