My 'field trips' extend over several weeks during which I am only able

I may process some of the images again for a special case.
I store all of my material (under Linux) in Y/M/D folders under the
Pictures folder.
As it stands I have now populated the Shotwell db and find my images
wildly apart depending on my processing date.
How do I solve this and pull all raw, processed and xmp files of common
name together?
In Shotwell today, you can't. :(
I assume that when you write "processed file" you mean a JPEG image
generated using an external RAW editor such as UFRaw. It would be nice
if the user could somehow tell Shotwell that an existing processed file
and RAW file belong together and should be treated as the same image.
That's http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/3061 (see especially comment #8
there). (Another approach to implement this might be photo stacks - see
http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/2090).
Shotwell today also has no knowledge of XMP files. We'd like to add
support for those too: see http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/3035 and
http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/1879 .
