Whit this tutorial <http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/ubuntu/set-gmail-as-default-mail-client-in-ubuntu/>you'll be able to set Gmail as your default mail client for ubuntu. So every time you click on a "mailto" link you'll be redirected to Gmail web client. Haven't tried with shotweel, but it should work. Don't know if there is a similar solution for other mail provider.
