this is a reasonable idea - I've ticketed it at

You should know, however, that we're thinking about storing thumbnails
in photo directories themselves at some point:

With this approach, we'd create a .thumbnail directory in each photo
directory and store thumbnails there. At that point there would be no
need for a directory tree as you propose. Cheers -
