f-spot has a nifty feature in that when you're cropping, and retaining original dimensions, it will automagically switch from portrait to landscape. This is something I found more useful than I realised. With many photos looking better landscape format than portrait, especially on web galleries, I sometimes crop images but try and swap portrait to landscape at the same time, but retaining photo dimensions at the same time, if that makes any sense.
There was mention that shotwell would have an option to remember 'original size' on subsequent crops but I can't recall if a feature request was raised for this. Would there be any interest in a portrait-to-landscape switch as described above?
