I'm cautiously optimistic that it might be a one-off. I've checked the
log and notice that there don't appear to be any duplicate filenames,
so is it possible it's just doing some housekeeping on my thumbnails?

I decided to just let it run and after 5+ hours it finished doing
whatever it was doing. Seems ok now.
