Jim, 

I was copying the photos from a local folder. In looking at my preferences I 
saw the "Import photos to" field was set to (none), after updating this I got 
the import to work successfully. So I guess there needs to be a check at import 
time for that directory being set, and if not set maybe pop-up (as much as I 
dislike popups) a window to allow the user to set it. I don't know how it came 
unset in the first place.
