While I would love to see more shotwell development and don't have much use for geary either, the fundamental issue is probably that they have to keep funding. An interesting insight is given in this article: https://lwn.net/Articles/511260/
As for the map widget, it's been tagged just recently for 0.14 (though it also had been tagged for 0.10 but at that point the widget and dependent upstream distro packages were in rather rough shape) but it's certainly not forgotten. Some new features would be great, but I'd rather they keep it stable than adding functionality - our whole picture libraries (minus the backups) depend on it. Whatever it is we certainly all hope for ongoing, steady development of shotwell.
