Consider for example that GTK is loads faster on Xglamo than xf86-video-glamo - there's clearly some influence of the driver here. Of course the speed would be higher if the chip performed better, but there are some problems that prevent us from getting the best out of what we do have. This kind of problem exists even on "real" graphics hardware...
