I am using a 'classical' oe setup with org.openembedded.dev (no oe-core,
no layers).
Since I would like to go meta-smartphone , I would like to ask if the
full process documented somewhere.

Does the naming change from meta-shr to meta-smartphone come with a
content / strategy change ? I.e. will/can other distros beside shr be
supported with that?
Does the whole layer concept even still have distros?

Seems like it's time I get started with oe-core and add the htcleo
machine :)

Best
