Indeed, I've patched openembedded to compile the kernel from
cyanogenmod, which was derived from the Motorola-supplied kernel source.

I've looked through all of the information linked from that page.
Unfortunately, it doesn't provide the details I'm looking for.  See my
recent reply for where I've got to with this and where I'm stuck.  (I'll
forward it to the mobile-linux-discuss list.)
