OE should be compatible (in theory) with FreeBSD too, but nobody is
really using that so there could be some hidden issues.

version or distribution is not so important, but if you want something
which works most of times, use shr-chroot as suggested on that wiki page
(if you can chroot from FreeBSD to linux somehow, than you wouldn't even 
need VM).

Yes it should be uptodate, but please notice that there is mostly just
one pointer to our Makefile which is always uptodate and it checkouts
all needed sources and also that shr-chroot if you decide to use it.
