Hi everybody,

In this post I will share with you my first use experiences with the SHR
unstable image. Here is what I've done to get those experiences:
Flash kernel: uImage-2.6.29-oe11+gitr119838
+2d158aae9d8d36f575504f59884ed8e80802efe2-r3.5-om-gta02.bin
Flash rootft: shr-lite-glibc-ipk--20090808-om-gta02.rootfs.jffs2

Now for what I've experienced:
- I get a choice of Languages, there is only one choice and no "cancel,
give up, download more" or anything else button. So I have to tell the
phone to do the only thing possible.
- I get a choice of profiles. Upon selecting a profile, I get a
description on the bottom part of the screen. However, this part of the
screen is so small that I have to scroll both ways. I select the Illume
SHR profile, but I'm left with two questions:
  - Why does the box not take up the whole screen? I thought EFL was
specially made for the phone, but it feels like a desktop thing with
useless borders around it.
  - If making the box larger is hard/impossible, then why is the
description so large?
- I then get to choose which quick-launch items I want. This means that
I'm forced to configure an experience I'm going to have in the future. I
have never run SHR before, so how am I suppose to choose:
 - Should I select everything, is it bad if I miss out on one of these?
 - Is it possible to change this later or does this decision really
matter?

All in all, here are some of the things I think may help:
- If there is only one way to do it, just do it.
- For decisions that can be made later (like quick-launch items), just
use a default and let the user change it with a configuration program.
- Why use checkboxes on a touch device? You could just as well use
toggle buttons with a marker in front of the text to show if it is
selected.
- Scroll bars only show if you actually scroll, but this removes the
user's feedback if they try to scroll past the last part of the page,
how do you know it's at the end?
- The end point of the scroll bar are not visible: what is the top-most
and bottom most position of the scroll-bar? (aka if I see the scroll-bar
I still can't guess how far down the list I am)
- The glass button effect is on top of the icons instead of below it and
I can't see why you would do that except to make it less visible by
making it more stylish.
- Trying to scroll in the settings menu (with the matrix of buttons)
will actually select a button. There is no way for the user to know if
it is scrollable, so the user should not be punished for trying to
scroll.
- There are two places for settings: hidden in the bar above, and simply
the settings tool in the quick-launch.
- Finger scrolling is way harder then "nail" scrolling: using a sharper
object makes scrolling respond much better for some reason.
- At the end of the illume settings menu, you can scroll all the way to
the right (Extensions, System) but there is no way to tell if you are at
the end.

Well, that's my first 15 minutes of using SHR, looking forward to a
stable release!

Greetings,
  Bram
