I'll try again today and see if I can get sound - thats at least a sorta

I find that quick dimming quite annoying too. Should we remove it in
shr-T?

I think so - there are two aspects that makes it such a pain:

In the Australian sun, even in outdoor shade, a change from 100% to 80%
brightness is the difference between barely visible and invisible.

The quick dim makes it very annoying as it changes while you are looking
at the screen and upsets concentration.

It needs either removal, or a much smarter control mechanism - perhaps
controllable from fsoraw so apps like fbreader, epdfview, etc can turn
it off. I actually cant think of any advantages to having it - I dont
think any real power savings result and its so annoying :)

Part of the problem is that the dim timeout is shorter than the time needed for
many actions, eg opening most apps.

ideally i could open messages, see the message list, open a message and click
reply fast enough that my clicks would be enough to keep the screen from
dimming.
