This has been the behaviour for as long as I've used it.

This closes the current log file and starts logging to a new file, named after
the date/time when the button was pressed. Very useful when logging for OSM
uploads.

Current log file name - you should see it change when you tap the Split
button.

I tap on a .log file and after a few moments it returns me to the Tracks
screen. When I exit that it shows the track from the log file in green. I
haven't tried it with gpx files, but assume it works similarly.
