What prevents you from just downloading kernel, modules and
jffs2-rootfs to the sd-card and flash them from there? wget,
flash_eraseall and nandwrite do the job.

For a boot-partition on the sd-card I'd indeed propose ext3. For mere
data partitions like maps or multimedia ext2 is sufficient.
