Thanks, the xrandr --dpi 284x280 worked!

I also noticed that the font size only changes when a 90° rotation is
triggered. If I let the screen rotate only up and down (180°) the fonts
don't get scaled.

...so maybe during a 90° rotation (where the dimensions are swapped) the
dpi gets internally changed and when the swap restores the original
resolution the dpi doesn't get restored along with it.

I don't know where to look on the code to check if this thought could
make sense.
