Xmgrace is a commonly used plotting program under Unix ( see http://plasma-gate.weizmann.ac.il/Grace/ ), which is often already included in a common Linux installation. In your example, it is simply used to vizualize the data, you can use your favourite plotting program to vizualize the contents of "bands.dat" instead.
