Hi all, I have found a very efficient way of online file synchronization and file sharing method between multiple operating systems and computers.
Suppose that you are carrying out research involving 4 different computers. The first one is a linux workstation where you run siesta calculations. The second one is your linux desktop in your office. The third one is your macbook in your home. The last one is your advisor's windows pc. If you are used to work with bash and matlab scripts for input file generation and data analysis ( like me ) and store them in a $HOME/bin folder. You always need to synchronize your scripts among your workstation-desktop-macbook computers MANUALLY !!.. Also suppose that you are working on a paper with your advisor. The latex files, pdfs and doc files should be accessible for you and your advisor. For this reason, you always need to print out your draft paper for your advisor's evaluation or transfer the files by using a usb stick..... All these problems are solved when you install DropBox on every computer you use. Put your scripts and executables in a $HOME/DropBox/bin folder and link that folder as $HOME/bin. Also put your draft paper folder into $HOME/DropBox/MyPapers and share it with your advisor... That's all ! DropBox also provides online backup for your scripts and docs. The free version of DropBox has 2 Gb storage limit, but it can be increased to 10 Gb if you manage to invite 32 people to DropBox.
