Today at 6:21pm, Jeffrey Yasskin expounded:

++ Forgive a Windows user's ignorance, but, What is a journaling
++ filesystem?

My understanding is [that]: All metadata operations (i.e. adding a file in
a directory, renaming a file, etc.) are first written to a journal, then
the journal is read and the actions are performed. So if power is lost,
the journal just gets read and the same actions are performed. So the
metadata can't get into an inconsistent state. What this means is that
slow fscks are unnecessary and the filesystem is more reliable. (fsck
checks for metadata consistency.)
