The HOWTOs are *very* helpful. I liked O'Reilley's _Running_Linux_. They
make an effort to remain distribution non-specific. It has sections on
UNIX programming tools and such, which you may or may not already know,
but it also discusses setting up printing and networking and other
services "by hand." I thought it a good book for easing into system
administration for someone who's already familiar with UNIX from a user
perspective. For current details, they often refer the reader to the
appropriate HOWTO, but it is a nice overview. If you're interested in the
details of something more specific, then one of O'Reilley's other books
(Sendmail, TCP/IP, etc.) might be more appropriate.
