In order to avoid the nameserver hangups that the others mention (which never
happen unless you try to access the network when you are disconnected), you
might try diald, the on-demand dialer for Linux. Whenever you try to access
the network, it dials out, then drops the connection after so many minutes
depending on what service you used. Unfortunately, there are a bunch of
non-working rpm combinations out there. I've put the combo that worked for me
on
ftp://horus.util.utexas.edu/pub
diald-0.16.4 are the binaries
diald-config-1.2.1 is the configuration set base (non-working but essential)
diald-config-unmetered-0.2 is a working configuration for an unmetered line.
I found them really useful.
