You don't need to boot from the rescue disk if you still have your other
HD around.  Just change the boot line in /etc/lilo.conf to
"boot=/dev/fd0", and run lilo.

I do this all the time to keep a boot floppy around. If something
happens to my HD, I can always boot to the floppy which has nothing on
it other than lilo on its MBR.

When you change drives, use lilo on the floppy MBR to boot linux and
change the line back to "boot=/dev/hda" and run lilo again to put it on
the MBR of your new drive.

It sounds like a lot, but it's *much* faster than dealing with a rescue
disk.
