Hi all,
I know it's been a while, but I finally got around to installing StarOffice. I
am not real impressed with it on a performance level. Even though SO says it
will run with 32Mb, I don't really suggest trying this. I really hate having
everything swap when I change applications. This is on a P-233, under KDE,
which is itself a bit of a memory hog, but not near so bloated as StarOffice.
I have only 64Mb at home, if I had 96Mb, I might try it to see how it responds
when it can fit itself into memory.
WRT the installation process, it creates a temporary directory in /tmp, which
could cause problems if you have /tmp on a small separate partition. My /tmp
is 100Mb, and it worked OK, even though SO said that it needed something like
135Mb of space on /tmp.
Anyway, for now I'll be sticking with LyX for word processing. I'll be looking
into word2x, which converts word documents into LaTeX and HTML.
(http://www.word2x.alcom.co.uk). I can't imagine needing to PRODUCE word
documents, and a cursory seach for programs which convert INTO word has yielded
no result, so I guess no one else has had the need either.
