I use a Millenium II with xfree86 and it works great. You have to use the
SVGA server but the SVGA server supports both AGP and PCI versions of the
board with full acceleration. the SVGA server provides acceleration on
several cards but I read somewhere that the xf86 Matrox Millenium support
was excellent and that it was probably the best card/server combination to
get for Linux. The Xi server may or may not provide better performance, I
looked at it too when initially there was no support for AGP, but as soon
as I looked a little more I found out that the AGP version was supported in
the more recent releases of xf86 and I haven't looked back since. Just
look at what gets sent to stdout when you start the xserver up (I just look
at the output after I exit X) and it should tell you what acceleration
features it is using (I forget now what it does but it says it's using XAA
(X Acceleration Architecture) and a couple of things about caching bitmaps...).
