PS, BTW, etc: i will be setting up dhcp myself for the first time in a while
tomorrow, so i can update the web page infos. any tips you think would be
useful to the masses would be appreciated... (known working versions/distro's,
etc)

This problem gave me some trouble, but took about a half hour or so to
solve.

I am using Debian 2.0, with its 0.70-3 DHCPCD package. The package's
post-installation script runs ifconfig, scans for any active
interfaces, and displays them to the user as selections for interfaces
to run DHCP on. If no interface is found, as was the case with my
ethernet interface which wasn't up, the script crashes without printing a meaningful
error. The solution involves an ugly modification to
/var/lib/dpkg/info/dhcpcd.postinst; after the line which sets the
variable IFACE_LIST, I inserted:

IFACE_LIST="eth0"

As I've said, it's ugly. :) But, it should do the job quite nicely
until a new version of the package is released.
