utexas.* and utcs.* are fed to dejanews at least, so i would say that's
almost as open as it gets.
granted, i don't like reading news with a web browser, but it certainly
is a good way to hunt what little information still exists on usenet
(relative to the noise, that is).
however, i personally don't have time to cope with a newsgroup---but--
since you guys are all running linux anyway, someone who does like the
idea can run a newsserver on his own machine (resnet or department, i guess)
and mirror the list onnit and vice versa, and make it available to all.
since you *do* run linux, why not use procmail? i do, and i only read
siglinux mail when i want to, not when i'm in the middle of doing other
things. here's my .procmailrc rule for siglinux:
::
^[EMAIL PROTECTED]
$HOME/Stuff/lists/sigl
which deposits all siglinux mail in the file ~/Stuff/lists/sigl
if someone can figure out the best way to mirror the newsgroup back to
the mailing list, and tell me (in detail, ie try it yourself so you can
tell me the steps to set it up), i could possibly be persuaded to setup
a newsserver on the acm's machine. mirroring the list to the newsgroup
is easy thanks to the CS dept's mail2news gateway.
