If you want to start with a distribution, try getting a slackware
distribution, and just install the minimum amount. Re-gen your kernel
to NOT use anything you don't need, and you will be off and running
with a pretty good close to minimum system quickly.
Personally, I would define the goals for my system, then list out the
tools
I want to have available to accomplish those goals. This would be a
good
starting point to define what software is needed. (i.e. look at each
package
and ensure you have the pre-reqs and co-reqs for each package. Not
hard, but
it can be time consuming work.)
