RH specific question

I have all RedHat/ tree on a computer on my LAN and would like to that box as
the ftp server for an ftp install. But when it comes time to download the RPMs
and install them, I'm told the was a "fatal error opening rpm database." Does
anyone know if there is any special setup on the ftp server to make it work?
