Just in case anyone encounters the problem I was having with my scsi card in the future, it was not linux or driver related. The ctrl-A bios option for adaptec was finding the adaptec pci card but not the seagate drive that was connected to it. A little hardware adjusting solved the problem -- once bios found it, the aic7xxx driver found the device during a lilo boot..
