Do you have all the supporting modules (such as parport_pc) loaded? Also,
if you answered yes to CONFIG_PNP and CONFIG_PNP_PARPORT in the kernel
config, it will use pnp to detect your printer so you might want to turn
that back on. On my system this works and it lists the printer brand and
model number at boot.
