I think the compile problem has more to do with the libraries included
in RH 6 than the kernel.  As I recall, the problem has something to do
with shadow password support.  You can find info on compilation
success/failure at http://www.ssh.fi/tech/ssh_query.html

I know it has the solution for RH 6 in there somewhere, because I
successfully compiled it several weeks ago with the instructions
provided in the database entry.
