Hey guys, I just heard from Paul Schmidt at Photodex. apparently after
sending an announcement to this list that CompuPic was available for
download, he was unnecessarily flamed by our list maintainer.
He sent a post to this list because he had been asked by many people at UT
to let him know when the compupic beta would be up, and he figured that
this list would be the easiest way to inform them. Paul isn't the enemy,
he's a pretty nice guy and had he known that letting siglinux know
compupic had been relesed was one of the deaadly sins, I'm sure he
wouldn't have made the post.
It is these immature acts that alienate companies from the linux
community. Paul was accused of spamming, simply because there are mailing
lists for new software, it was said, there should be nothing about that on
the siglinux list. If there should only be one list, or group, for each
subject, may I ask why austin has 3 linux user groups?
If this was just a blatant violation of policy, paul should have been
warned, politely asked not to do it again. Instead he was banned from the
siglinux list.
Paul was pretty shocked and upset by this. He wasn't trying to exploit
the siglinux list as his personal sales arsenal, he's just proud of his
new software and likes to know that people are using it.
I'd like to know if *anyone* other than Chris had a problem with Paul
posting that photodex was out. There aren't many austin companies selling
linux software, it's nice to see that there is at least one making an
effort to be a member of the linux community. They've already made one or
two small contributions to free software and have several others in
planning. This is not the next microsoft, it's a fairly small austin
company that we should support.
That's just my opinion, I could be wrong :)
