i flamed compupic; i still feel justified. i am sorry if i was overreacting
as i phrased the response as "the list feels XXX" when i should have said
"i feel XXX". i know most of you have heard of and use freshmeat. the
point of my flame was that some random company announcing their software
on the list is an unsolicited email on a topic we could find out about
elsewhere if we wanted to. this list is not, i feel, the place to point
out every new piece of software that comes around---go subscribe to the
freshmeat newsletter if you want that--i do.

the points of my flame are threefold: 1) please include some clue about
what your software does---this email was information free as a primary
source (ie i dont want to open up a web browser to get the meat of the
matter). 2) i had no idea compupic was an austin company, or that there
were subscribers on the list who were related to it, and that omar had
previously talked to these folks. 3) i get approximately 2 spams per
week to siglinux-owner@ from companies who obviously trawl LUG databases
for addresses, each of which i give a personal and thought-out flame to.
i admit this was "personally" addressed, but so are some of the spams--
using the information i obviously entered by hand (ie no caps, verbatim
what i entered) into the database to present a "personalized" feel--
which was no doubt created by a perl script :(

i've gotten only one reply from any company that's done this (out of
say 50), so i can't exactly assume theres someone at the other end of
the line that cares in the generic case.

i apologize for the bad light i've shed on the group as a result of this,
and will apologize personally to the compupic folks. but, if it happens
again (not by compupic i'm sure, as they have no doubt been chastened),
i will likely react in similar fashion unless it's exceedingly clear
that theres something of local interest about the post--let that be a
warning to you.

if enough folks feel im overstepping my bounds as protector of the list,
i'll step down if theres someone reliable to take it over--i don't want
to be a nazi standing on one side of a line by myself. i have altruistic
intentions as well as a personal desire to read every post that comes
over the list and into my mailbox, but more than that i want siglinux to
be useful in a way i can't find ALG-l to be---it's tooooo high traffic
for someone with other things to do in the day to participate in throughout
the day. sorry if that's not what the group wants, and if thats really the
case i'll stand back and shut up.

peace.
