I could have sworn there was support for the Rage128... oh well... I know
there is linux support for the V3 because there is a resource page dedicated
to glide (www.xxglidexx.com), also listed in the 3dfx HOW-TO (maybe similar
to the banshee setup). I think they even released some new stuff last month
(check 3dfx's webpage)... I know there are new drivers for windows and
thought I saw the linux ones there... also, the TNT/TNT2/TNT2U all use the
SVGA server... (a clean RH 6.0 w/ the newest X support) picked it up fine.
There are drivers on Nvidia's webpage to give you 3d support. It's not too
bad... (I *think* about 60-75% of the windows version). I read a review of
the performance two weeks ago on www.linuxgames.com. Nvidia has committed to
releasing a new set of drivers when the new version of X comes out (4.0),
which will provide "real performance gains." If you can't find the drivers,
I'll send them to you. If you want a high-end card, wait and see if the g400
is any good... I think John Carmack said in his .plan file that he'd help
out on the linux support. Otherwise, I'd go tnt2.

Subject: video cards
ok, i just got word that the Rage 128 which is on the Rage Fury, All in
wonder 128, and other new ATI boards doesn't have an X server (and the
mach64 is apparently incompatible)
i'm building a new P2 box, and i need a high end video card with S-video and
composite outputs, hardware DVD decode, and 9x, NT, X support. so far
here's what i've gotten:
1. Rage 128: has video outs, dvd, 9x, nt, and NO linux support
2. voodoo3: has video outs, dvd assist (what's that mean?), 9x, nt, and NO
linux support
3. TNT2: has NO video outs, dvd (software only?), 9x, nt, and NO linux
support unless the original TNT X server is OK
4. TNT2 Ultra from Creative: has video outs, dvd, 9x, nt, and NO linux
support unless the old TNT works
this is getting to be a real pain. if anybody has any suggestions, please
let me know.
thanks,
GT
